2007 SHINKIKAN NEWS
KATY YMCA PROMOTIONS

Dec 1, 2007.
The Shinkikan Katy program held testing on Saturday, December 1st. The students testing included the following: Andy W. 3rd Kyu; Steve H. 4th Kyu; Guy P. 4th Kyu; Devon P. 5th Kyu. Each of the students demonstrated the required techniques as well as several additional techniques added during the tests. Many of the students and their guests came together after the testing to share dinner at a local pizzeria. Shinkikan Katy would like to thank Sensei Calderon, Rafael and Ron for their support during the testing. The next test for Shinkikan Katy is tentatively scheduled for April 2008. We look forward to another excellent night of testing and another night out at a local restaurant.
Please remember that Shinkikan Katy holds classes at the Katy YMCA at the corner of Westheimer Parkway and Peek Roads in Katy every Tuesday from 8:30 to 9:30pm and Saturdays from 5:00 to 6:30pm. All current students of Shinkikan are welcome and encouraged to attend. Students of Shinkikan that have reached the level of Shodan and are interested in teaching a class at the Katy YMCA should contact Sensei Calderon, Chris Bystriansky or Shawn Carey. Shinkikan strongly recommends that all students reaching the level of Shodan instruct a class on a regular basis to increase their understanding of the fundamentals of Aikido.
The following Aikido Students performed their aikido promotions demonstration:
Devon - 5th Kyu
Steve - 4th Kyu
Guy - 4th Kyu
Andy - 3rd Kyu

DOJO IMPROVEMENTS

May 12, 2007.
Today, we spent all day fixing up the dojo. Rafael Garcia, Mike Nguyen, Matt Trimble, Hector Alba, and Zenaida all participated to make the dojo a better place for you and me.
We took up all the mats, removed the frame and cleaned up a bit.
We relayed the wood, drilled into the concrete and fastened down a more secure frame.
We put the mats back, after sweeping and vacuuming. And wa-la, the mats are now in-place and secure. They are not going to move anymore.
Thanks guys! Because of you we have a better place to train!

ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE FESTIVAL

May 6, 2007.
Well, another demo that I was able to avoid doing a demo in, and again, Mike Nguyen came to the rescue.
I just don't like doing demos!
Every year we give a demonstration at the Asian Pacific American Heritage Association festival. I'm actually on the board of directors for this wonderful organization.
Want to give to a worthy cause, visit the APAHA website and donate some of your hard earned cash to help this organization educated Americans about the Asian Culture.

JAPAN FESTIVAL DEMO

April 14, 2007.
I wasn't able to make this years demo, to be honest with you I avoided it. Instead I asked Mike Nguyen to take over and lead the demonstration at the Japan Festival that is held every year in April.
You might be wondering why I avoided it; well I've grown tired of giving demos. It's fun, but I guess I've done one to many, so I want to take a break for a while.
The Japan Festival, though, is a wonderful event, held every year. You want to learn about Japan and the culture, visit the link below to the Japan American Society in Houston and check their calendar for next year's festival. It is the most fun event with incredible shows, dances, art and crafts.
A great event to take your kids, and best of all, the entrance is free.

JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE DOJO

March 28, 2007
The dojo is growing and more and more people are enjoying the training at ShinKiKan. This particular photo is me throwing Yulia in Koshi Nage. I think this is a great shot because Yulia hates Koshi Nage and the thrown really got her off the ground.
Koshi Nage may be the most disliked technique at the dojo because you really get picked up and thrown. And the taller your partner is, the more distance you have before you hit the ground.
Remember that training is an everyday thing. What was that value that I have on the wall at the dojo...Perseverance...Yep, that's it and it's a very important one if you want to get anywhere in Aikido, or in life for that matter.

R.O.B.S. DEMO

March 2, 2007.
Every year we get to perform a demonstration at the River Oaks Baptist School. This year we had the honor of having Patrick and Brian with us. We gave an Aikido demonstration, Patrick gave a Karate demonstration and Brian gave a Ninjutsu demonstration.
We do this for the fifth graders international festival. They get to learn about the wonderful power and benefits of learning and training in a martial art.
